The Swindler and His Master
Grimm's Fairy Tales
Let me tell you about a young fellow named Finn. Finn lived with his father in a cozy little cottage, and he had a big dream: he wanted to learn something truly amazing!
One day, Finn’s father said, "Son, it's time you learned a trade." So, they went to see a very clever man named Master Malakor who lived deep in the woods. People whispered he knew all sorts of secret tricks.
"Can you teach my son something special?" asked Finn’s father.
Master Malakor, who had a twinkle in his eye, replied, "Indeed! I can teach him a few things... very special things. Leave him with me for a year."
Finn was a quick learner. Zip, zap, zoom! He learned how to change himself into almost anything! It was like magic!
After some time, Finn wanted to visit his father. "Master," he said, "I miss my father."
"Alright," said Master Malakor. "But I will come for you in three days."
When Finn got home, his father was overjoyed. "What have you learned, my boy?"
Finn grinned. "Watch this, Father! Tomorrow, I'll turn into a beautiful, strong dog. You can sell me at the market for a good price. But remember, you *must* take off my collar before the sale is final, or I can't change back!"
The next day, Finn turned into the most handsome dog you ever saw. His father took him to market and a rich man offered a lot of money. Just as the deal was made, Finn’s father remembered and quickly slipped off the collar. POOF! The dog vanished, and Finn, back in his own shape, ran home laughing, with his father following with a heavy purse.
A little later, Finn said, "Father, this time I'll become a magnificent horse, even finer than the dog. Sell me, but please, please remember to take off the bridle before the new owner takes me away!"
So Finn became a splendid horse, and his father sold him for an even bigger bag of gold. But this time, the buyer was Master Malakor himself, in disguise! As Finn’s father reached for the bridle, Master Malakor quickly led the horse away. "Oh no!" thought Finn. "If he gets me to his stable with this bridle on, I'm stuck!"
Thinking fast, as they passed a flock of birds, WHOOSH! Finn changed into a little bird and flew up into the air.
But Master Malakor wasn't giving up. SWOOP! He changed into a big, hungry hawk and chased after the little bird.
The chase was on! Finn, the bird, dived into a pond and SPLASH! He became a slippery fish.
GLUG! Master Malakor, the hawk, turned into an even bigger, scarier fish, ready to gobble him up!
Finn, the little fish, had one last idea. He saw a beautiful princess walking by the pond. With a flick of his tail, he leaped out of the water and turned into a shiny gold ring, landing right on her finger!
Master Malakor, now looking like a sneaky servant, approached the princess. "Oh, Your Highness, that ring looks a bit dusty. Let me clean that for you!"
But just as he reached for it, PING! The ring turned into a tiny grain of wheat and fell amongst other grains scattered on the kitchen floor.
Master Malakor cackled. "Aha! I have you now!" He turned into a big, proud rooster and started pecking at all the grains, gobble, gobble, gobble, looking for Finn.
The rooster pecked and pecked, getting closer and closer to the grain that was Finn. But Finn was quicker! As the rooster bent down to peck the very last grain – which was him – ZAP! Finn changed into a clever, quick fox. And with one SNAP, the fox caught the rooster!
And that was the end of Master Malakor.
Finn, the clever boy, changed back into himself, gave a polite bow to the very surprised princess, and ran all the way home to his father. They had enough adventures for a lifetime, and Finn used his cleverness for good things from then on, always remembering the amazing tricks he had learned.
