• Thor's Wedding to the Giant

    Norse Mythology
One bright morning in Asgard, the land of the gods, Thor woke up with a big yawn. He reached for his mighty hammer, Mjolnir, which was always by his side. But… it wasn’t there!

"My hammer!" Thor roared, his voice like thunder. "Mjolnir is gone!" He looked under his bed. He looked in his closet. No hammer!

His clever friend, Loki, came to see what all the shouting was about. "What's wrong, Thor?" Loki asked.
"Someone stole Mjolnir!" Thor boomed, his red beard bristling with anger.
Loki thought for a moment. "I bet a giant took it. They're always causing trouble."

So, Loki decided to visit Freyja, the beautiful goddess. "Freyja," he said, "could I please borrow your magical feather cloak? I need to fly to Jotunheim, the land of the giants."
Freyja, always kind, said, "Of course, Loki! Find that hammer!"

Loki put on the cloak and WHOOSH! He flew to the land of the giants. There, he found Thrym, the king of the giants, sitting on his throne, looking very pleased with himself.
"Did you take Thor's hammer?" Loki asked.
Thrym chuckled, a deep rumbling sound. "Yes, I have Thor's hammer! And I've hidden it deep underground. I'll only give it back if I can marry the beautiful Freyja!"

Loki flew back to Asgard as fast as he could. He told Thor and Freyja what Thrym had said.
Freyja was NOT happy. "Marry a GIANT? Never!" she cried, and her special necklace, Brisingamen, shook with her anger. "I will not do it!"

All the gods and goddesses gathered. What could they do? They needed Mjolnir back!
Then Heimdall, the wisest god who could see and hear for miles, had an idea. "Thor," he said, "YOU should dress up as Freyja! Go to Jotunheim and pretend to be Thrym's bride."
Thor grumbled. "Me? In a dress? That's silly!" His face turned as red as his beard.
But Loki grinned. "It's a great plan, Thor! And I'll go with you as your bridesmaid!"

So, they found a beautiful wedding dress and a long, flowing veil for Thor. It was a bit tight, but they managed. He looked very funny with his big muscles under the soft fabric, but the veil covered most of his face and beard. Loki dressed up as a bridesmaid too.

Off they went to Jotunheim in Thor's goat-pulled chariot.
Thrym was overjoyed to see his 'bride.' "Welcome, my beautiful Freyja!" he boomed.
A huge wedding feast was prepared. Thor, still disguised as Freyja, was very hungry after the journey. He ate a whole ox, eight salmon, and all the sweets meant for the ladies. He also drank three big barrels of mead, a special honey drink.
Thrym watched in amazement. "My goodness!" he said. "I've never seen a bride eat so much!"
Quick-thinking Loki, as the bridesmaid, whispered to Thrym, "Freyja was so excited to marry you, she hasn't eaten for eight whole days!"
    "Ah!" said Thrym, satisfied.

Then, Thrym leaned in to lift the veil and give his bride a kiss. But he jumped back when he saw Thor's fiery, glaring eyes! "Why are Freyja's eyes so fierce and bright?" he asked, a little scared.
Loki quickly whispered again, "She was so excited to marry you, she hasn't slept for eight whole nights! That's why her eyes look so bright."
"Ah!" said Thrym again, though he still looked a bit worried.

Finally, Thrym said, "Bring out the hammer, Mjolnir! Place it on my bride's lap to bless our wedding!"
The giants brought the mighty hammer and carefully placed it on the lap of the disguised Thor.
Thor's heart leaped! He grabbed his hammer, Mjolnir! His fingers closed around the familiar handle.
Instantly, he threw off the dress and veil. "I AM THOR!" he roared.
The giants were shocked and terrified! Thor swung Mjolnir, and ZAP! BOOM! CRASH! He quickly defeated Thrym and all the other giants who tried to stop him.

Thor and Loki, with Mjolnir safe, returned to Asgard. All the gods cheered. Freyja was very relieved she didn't have to marry a giant.
And Thor learned to keep a closer eye on his amazing hammer from then on!
