The Fox and the Geese
Grimm's Fairy Tales
One bright morning, a clever fox with a very empty stomach was wandering through a meadow. His nose twitched, and his eyes spotted something wonderful: a big group of fluffy, white geese, happily munching on grass.
"Aha!" thought the fox, his mouth watering. "What a lovely breakfast... and lunch... and maybe even dinner!"
He tiptoed closer, a sneaky grin on his face. "Good day, my dear geese!" he called out, trying to sound friendly. "I'm terribly sorry to interrupt your meal, but I'm going to have to eat you all up, one after the other."
The geese stopped munching. They looked at each other with wide, worried eyes. Oh dear! This was not good news at all.
One old goose, a bit braver than the others, waddled forward. "Oh, Mr. Fox," she honked softly. "If we really must be eaten, could we please have one last wish? Could we sing one final song together? It’s a very important tradition for us."
The fox tapped his chin with a claw. He was very hungry, but a little music before a feast sounded rather nice. "Alright," he said, trying to look important. "One song. But make it snappy! My tummy is rumbling like thunder."
So, the geese gathered in a circle. They took a very, very deep breath. And then...
"HONK! HONK! GAAA-GAAA-HONK!" they all shrieked at the top of their lungs. It wasn't a pretty song. It was loud! It was noisy! It was the most ear-splitting honking you could ever imagine! "HONK! HONK! HONK!"
The fox clapped his paws over his ears. "Stop! Stop that awful noise!" he cried.
But the geese kept honking, louder and louder.
Now, not too far away, a farmer was fixing a fence. He heard the tremendous racket. "Goodness gracious!" he said to himself. "That sounds like my geese are in a terrible pickle!" He grabbed his big, strong walking stick and ran towards the noise as fast as he could.
Just as the farmer burst into the meadow, the fox, with his ears still ringing, saw him coming. With a yelp of surprise and fear, the fox turned around and scampered away into the woods as fast as his four paws could carry him. He didn't even stop to say goodbye!
The geese stopped their honking. They flapped their wings and quacked with relief. Their noisy song had saved them! And from that day on, they always made sure to practice their very loud singing, just in case.
