Bishop Børglum and His Men
Andersen's Fairy Tales
Imagine a big, old castle standing tall by the windy sea. Inside lived a Bishop named Børglum. Now, this Bishop wasn't like the kind, gentle ones you might think of. Oh no, Bishop Børglum was rather grumpy and he loved gold and getting his own way more than anything!
He had a whole team of knights, all dressed in clanky armor, riding strong horses. These knights weren't always busy doing good deeds. Mostly, they did whatever the Bishop told them to, even if it wasn't very nice. If the Bishop saw something he wanted, like a farmer's best cow or a fisherman's biggest catch, he'd send his knights, and poof! It would become the Bishop's.
One day, a ship sailed into the bay near the Bishop's castle. It was loaded with beautiful silks, shiny spices, and all sorts of wonderful treasures from far-off lands. Bishop Børglum looked out his window, rubbed his hands together, and said, "My, my! All those lovely things should be MINE!"
So, he called his knights. "Go down to that ship," he ordered, "and bring me everything valuable!"
The knights, clanking and clattering, rode down to the shore. The captain of the ship was very upset. "But these are my goods!" he cried. "I've sailed for months to bring them here!"
The knights just shrugged their armored shoulders. "The Bishop wants them," they said, and they started to take everything.
The poor captain watched as his treasures were carried away to the Bishop's castle. He was so angry and so sad. He looked up at the castle and shouted, "You greedy Bishop! You and your knights will pay for this! A storm will come for you!"
Bishop Børglum just laughed from his window. He loved his new treasures.
But that very night, the sky turned black. The wind began to howl like a hungry wolf, and the sea roared, sending giant waves crashing against the castle walls. It was the biggest, scariest storm anyone had ever seen!
The Bishop and his knights huddled together in the great hall of the castle. They were not so brave now. The castle shook, and stones began to fall. "We must get to the church!" cried the Bishop, thinking it would be safer there.
So, the Bishop and all his knights, in their clanky armor, ran through the storm towards the nearby church. But just as they reached it, a huge wave, bigger than any before, crashed over the land! It was so powerful that it washed sand and earth all around the church.
When the storm finally calmed and the sun peeked out, the people who lived nearby couldn't believe their eyes. The Bishop's grand castle was damaged, but the church, with the Bishop and all his knights inside, had sunk deep into the earth! Only the very top of its tower could be seen sticking out of a new, sandy hill.
And there they stayed, the grumpy Bishop and his knights, trapped beneath the ground. Some say that on wild, stormy nights, if you listen very carefully near that sandy hill, you can still hear the faint clanking of armor and the Bishop complaining about the dark. And sometimes, people say they see ghostly figures of knights riding through the mist, still following the orders of their greedy Bishop, forever caught in their story.
