• The Thundercloud Picture

    Andersen's Fairy Tales
High up in the sky, where the birds sing their highest songs, a very big, dark cloud was forming. It wasn't like the fluffy white clouds that drifted lazily by. Oh no, this cloud was full of rumbles and grumbles.

"I am the most important cloud!" it seemed to mutter, puffing itself up. "Just you wait and see what I can do!"

The little white clouds whispered, "He looks a bit cross today."

The big, dark cloud grew bigger and darker. "Hmph!" it boomed. "You silly little puffs! You just float around. But I! I can make things happen!"

And then, it started its show.

First, a bright flash of light zigzagged across the sky. Zzzzzap!
Then came a mighty ROAR! BOOM! CRRRAAASH! The big cloud was putting on a show with its thunder.
People on the ground looked up. "Oh dear," said a mother, "a storm is coming! Quick, children, inside!"
Animals in the fields found shelter under trees or in barns.

The big, dark cloud was very pleased with itself. "See?" it rumbled. "Everyone pays attention to ME!"

And then, the rain came down. Not a gentle sprinkle, but a big, splashy shower that drummed on rooftops and made puddles for ducks to play in later. The cloud poured and poured, washing everything below.

It rained so hard and thundered so loudly that the big cloud started to feel a bit tired. All that flashing and booming and pouring took a lot of energy.

Slowly, the big, dark cloud began to fade. It had used up all its rumbles and flashes. The rain softened to a drizzle, and then stopped.

The sun peeked out from behind the other clouds, smiling down.

And what a sight it was! Everything looked so fresh and clean! The flowers lifted their heads, thirsty for the drink. The trees sparkled with raindrops. The air smelled sweet and new.

And best of all, stretching right across the sky, was a beautiful rainbow, full of all the colors you can imagine – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

The little white clouds floated by, admiring the view.
The big, noisy cloud was gone, but it had left behind something wonderful. Sometimes, even a big grumble can bring a lot of good!
