• Going South by Driving North

    Chinese Fables
On a bright and breezy morning, a man named Mr. Wally was getting ready for a big trip. He had a shiny new cart, pulled by two very, very fast horses. He also had a big bag of coins for the journey and a driver who was known for being super speedy.

"Where are you off to in such a hurry?" asked a friendly farmer, who was resting by the side of the road.

Mr. Wally puffed out his chest proudly. "I'm going to the wonderful land of Sunny Meadows! It's far to the south, and I want to get there as quickly as possible!"

The farmer scratched his head. "Sunny Meadows, you say? That's a lovely place. But... excuse me for asking, aren't you heading north?" He pointed up the road, away from the sun.

Mr. Wally chuckled. "Oh, don't you worry about that! My horses are the fastest in the land! They can run like the wind!"

"That's true," said the farmer, "they are very fine horses. But Sunny Meadows is still south. Going north, even with fast horses, will take you further away, not closer."

Mr. Wally just smiled wider. "And look!" he said, patting his big bag of coins. "I have plenty of money for the journey! I can buy all the hay and water my horses need, and snacks for me and my driver!"

"Having lots of money is helpful, for sure," the farmer agreed patiently. "But if you're traveling north, all that money will just help you go further north, away from Sunny Meadows."

Mr. Wally wasn't convinced. "Plus," he added, "my driver is the best! He can drive so straight and so fast, we'll be there in no time!"

The farmer sighed a little. "Yes, a good driver is a treasure. But if he drives you straight and fast in the wrong direction – north, instead of south – then all his skill will just take you even farther from Sunny Meadows, even faster!"

Mr. Wally just waved cheerfully. "Thanks for your concern, but we'll be fine! Giddy up, horses! To Sunny Meadows!" And with a crack of the whip, the cart sped off... north.

The farmer watched them disappear in a cloud of dust, shaking his head. "Well," he mumbled to himself, "he certainly has everything he needs for a journey, except for going in the right direction." And he wondered if Mr. Wally would ever reach Sunny Meadows at all.
