Waiting for Hares by the Stump
Chinese Fables
One sunny morning, in a big green field, lived a farmer named Leo. Leo was working hard, getting his soil ready to plant yummy vegetables. The sun was warm, and the birds were singing.
Suddenly, whoosh! A fluffy brown rabbit came dashing across the field. It was running so fast, it wasn't looking where it was going.
Right in the middle of the field was an old, sturdy tree stump. BONK! The rabbit ran straight into the stump and, oh dear, it fell down and didn't get up again.
Leo was very surprised. He walked over and picked up the rabbit. "Well, that's an easy dinner!" he thought.
That night, Leo had a tasty rabbit stew. And he started to think. "Hmm," he thought, "that was much easier than digging and planting all day. Maybe I don't need to work so hard. I can just wait by the stump, and more rabbits will come!"
So, the very next day, Leo didn't pick up his hoe or his shovel. Instead, he went and sat down right next to the tree stump. He waited. And waited. And waited.
The sun climbed high in the sky, and then it started to go down. No rabbits came.
The day after that, Leo did the same thing. He sat and waited. Still no rabbits.
Days turned into weeks. Leo just sat by the stump. His field, where he used to grow vegetables, started to get full of weeds. The weeds grew taller and taller. His tools began to get rusty.
And did any more rabbits crash into the stump? Not a single one.
Soon, Leo had no fresh vegetables, and he was very hungry. The other people in the village would walk by and see Leo sitting by the stump. They would shake their heads and sometimes giggle a little.
Leo learned that waiting for good luck to just happen again and again isn't a very good plan. It’s much better to work for the things you need!
