• The Two Pots

    Aesop's Fables
Down by the river, where the water flowed fast, two pots found themselves bobbing along.

One was a sturdy, shiny Brass Pot. He gleamed in the sun and felt very proud of how strong he was. The other was a gentle Earthenware Pot, made of clay. She was painted with pretty flowers but knew she could break easily.

The river current was quite strong that day, and it swirled them around.

"Hey there!" called the Brass Pot to the Earthenware Pot. "This river is a bit wild! Why don’t we float side-by-side? I’m so strong, I can protect you!"

The Earthenware Pot smiled politely. "That’s very kind of you," she said, "but I think it’s better if I keep my distance. You see, you are very strong, and I am… well, I’m a bit delicate."

"Nonsense!" boomed the Brass Pot. "Don’t you worry your pretty painted head about it! I’ll be super careful. Come on, it’ll be fun!" And before the Earthenware Pot could say much more, a big swirl of water pushed them closer.

The Brass Pot, trying to be friendly, nudged a little nearer.

"Oh, please be careful!" whispered the Earthenware Pot.

But just then, a wave bumped them together. Clink! went the Brass Pot, unharmed. But Crack! went the Earthenware Pot.

Oh dear! A big crack appeared on her side, and then another. Soon, the pretty Earthenware Pot broke into pieces and sank beneath the water.

The Brass Pot felt a bit silly and sad. He hadn't meant to cause any harm, but his strength, next to her gentleness, had been too much. He floated on alone, thinking that sometimes, even with the best intentions, it’s important to understand who you’re with and what they need.
