The Lioness
Aesop's Fables
One sunny afternoon in the savanna, a very chatty fox named Fiona was showing off to the other animals. Fiona had a whole bunch of little fox kits, and they were all tumbling and yipping around her feet.
"Look at my wonderful family!" Fiona chirped, puffing out her chest. "I have so many! One, two, three, four, five little kits! Aren't they adorable?"
Lena the Lioness was resting nearby with her single, sturdy cub. Her cub wasn't yipping; it was quietly watching everything with big, serious eyes.
Fiona trotted over to Lena. "Hello, Lena! My, what a lovely day. And how many little ones do you have this year?" she asked, though she could clearly see just one. "Oh, just the one?" Fiona added, flicking her bushy tail. "It's a shame, really. More is always merrier, don't you think?"
Lena the Lioness looked at Fiona. Then she looked down at her cub, giving it a gentle nudge with her nose. The cub sat up a little straighter.
"One," Lena purred, her voice calm and proud. "Only one. But he is a LION."
Fiona the Fox blinked. She looked at her five little kits tumbling around. Then she looked at Lena's cub, who sat tall and strong. Fiona realized that sometimes, having just one very special thing can be the best thing of all.
