The Farmer and His Sons
Aesop's Fables
Papa Barnaby had a problem. A big, sleepy problem. His three sons, Tom, Sam, and Ben, loved napping under the apple tree much more than they loved working in the fields. Papa Barnaby was getting old, and his back ached more each day. He knew he wouldn't be around forever, and he worried about his lazy boys.
One sunny morning, feeling weaker than usual, Papa Barnaby called his sons to his bedside. "My boys," he said, his voice a little shaky, "I have a secret to tell you. There is a great treasure hidden in our vineyard. I buried it there many years ago."
Tom’s eyes widened. Sam sat up straight. Ben even stopped yawning. "Treasure, Papa?" they asked all at once.
"Yes," Papa Barnaby nodded slowly. "You will have to dig for it. It's somewhere... in the soil." And with that, he closed his eyes and took a long, peaceful breath, and said no more.
The sons were sad that their father was gone, but they were also very excited about the treasure. "Gold coins!" whispered Tom. "Sparkling jewels!" imagined Sam. "Maybe a chest full of shiny things!" added Ben.
The very next day, they grabbed shovels, picks, and hoes. They went to the vineyard and started digging. Tom dug near the old oak tree. Sam dug between the rows of grapevines. Ben dug by the stone wall. They dug and dug, turning over every clump of earth. They dug all morning, all afternoon, and even as the sun began to set.
But they found nothing. No gold. No jewels. No treasure chest. Just dirt, and more dirt, and a few wiggly worms.
Tired and disappointed, they sat down. "Papa must have been dreaming," grumbled Tom.
"Or maybe someone else found it," sighed Sam.
Spring came, and then summer. The sons, having nothing else to do, sometimes wandered through the vineyard. They noticed something strange. The grapevines, in the soil they had dug up so thoroughly, looked greener and healthier than ever before. Soon, the vines were bursting with big, juicy grapes – more grapes than they had ever seen!
They harvested the grapes, and it was the biggest harvest the farm had ever produced. They sold the grapes for a lot of money.
As they counted their earnings, Ben suddenly looked up. "Wait a minute!" he said. "All that digging we did... it made the soil loose and good for the vines!"
Tom scratched his head. "And because the soil was so good, we got all these amazing grapes!"
Sam smiled. "Papa said the treasure was *in* the vineyard. He didn't say it was gold or jewels. The treasure was the fruit of our hard work!"
The three brothers looked at each other. They finally understood. Their wise old father had tricked them into working, and in doing so, they had found the best treasure of all: the reward that comes from hard work. From that day on, Tom, Sam, and Ben weren't so lazy anymore. They worked hard in their vineyard every year, and it always gave them a wonderful bounty.
