The Lion, the Bear, and the Fox
Aesop's Fables
Deep in the woods, where the trees grew tall and the birds sang sweet songs, lived Leo the Lion and Bruno the Bear. One sunny afternoon, both Leo and Bruno were feeling quite hungry. As luck would have it, they spotted a tasty little deer at the very same moment!
"ROAR!" went Leo, his voice like thunder. "That deer is mine for lunch!"
"GRRROWL!" rumbled Bruno, his voice like a coming storm. "No way, I saw it first!"
And so, the two big animals began to argue. Then, they began to fight! Leo swiped with his mighty paws, and Bruno swung his strong arms. They tumbled and wrestled, kicking up dust and leaves. They growled and roared so loudly that all the little creatures in the forest hid.
After a long, long time, both Leo and Bruno were very, very tired. Their tongues were hanging out, and they were panting hard. They flopped down on the grass, too exhausted to even look at the deer anymore.
Now, hiding behind a big oak tree, a clever little fox named Felix had been watching the whole thing. Felix had a twinkle in his eye. He saw Leo and Bruno lying there, too tired to move.
Quiet as a mouse, Felix tiptoed out from behind the tree. He crept over to the little deer, grabbed it gently in his mouth, and scampered away into the bushes before Leo or Bruno even noticed!
A few minutes later, Leo lifted his heavy head. "Where... where's the deer?" he puffed.
Bruno slowly sat up. "It's... gone!" he gasped.
Then, they both saw a flash of red fur disappearing into the forest. It was Felix, carrying their dinner!
Leo sighed a big, tired sigh. "Oh, bother," he said. "We fought so hard, and now that sneaky fox has our meal."
Bruno nodded sadly. "If only we had agreed to share," he mumbled, "we both could have had a nice dinner. Now, neither of us has anything at all."
And all they could do was watch Felix enjoy the tasty treat they had fought so hard for.
