The Spindle, the Shuttle, and the Needle
Grimm's Fairy Tales
In a cozy little cottage, nestled beside a whispering wood, lived a kind young girl. Her parents were gone, so she lived with her dear old auntie. One day, her auntie, feeling her time was near, called the girl to her side.
"My sweet child," she said, her voice soft like rustling leaves, "I don't have much gold to leave you. But I have these: a spindle, a shuttle, and a needle. Use them well, and they will bring you good fortune."
Soon after, the auntie passed away, and the girl was all alone. She remembered her auntie's words and picked up the spindle. "Well, spindle," she said, "let's see what you can do." As she began to spin thread, the spindle suddenly leaped from her hand! "Oh my!" she cried. It whizzed out the door, trailing a fine, golden thread behind it.
The girl, curious and a little excited, followed the golden thread. The spindle zoomed through the woods, over little streams, and finally, it flew right up to the window of a grand castle and stopped. Peeking inside, the girl saw a handsome young Prince.
The Prince had been looking for a bride. He wanted to marry a girl who was "both the poorest and the richest." When he saw the spindle and then the girl, he came to the window.
"Hello there!" he called. "What brings you and your speedy spindle to my castle?"
The girl, a bit shy but brave, replied, "Sir, I followed my spindle. It seems to have chosen your window!"
The Prince smiled. "I am looking for a bride," he explained. "She must be the poorest girl, yet also the richest. Are you such a girl?"
The girl thought for a moment. "Well," she said, "I am poor because I have no gold or land. My dear auntie left me only this spindle, a shuttle, and a needle. But," she added, her eyes twinkling, "I believe I am rich because I can work, I am kind, and these tools, they say, can do wonderful things!"
The Prince was intrigued. "Show me," he said, and led her to a large, empty room in the castle. "If your tools are as special as you say, make this room beautiful."
The girl took out her shuttle. "Alright, shuttle," she whispered, "it's your turn!" She placed it on the floor, and whoosh! The shuttle got to work, zipping and zooming all by itself! It wove the most wonderful carpet, with colors like a rainbow, and patterns of sunshine and flowers. Then it wove curtains soft as a cloud, and tapestries that told happy stories. The room began to glow with warmth and beauty.
The Prince watched, his eyes wide with amazement.
Then, the girl picked up her needle. "Now for the finishing touches, needle dear!" she said. The little needle woke up! It danced over the fabrics, stitching tiny, sparkling stars onto the curtains, and making the flowers on the tapestries look almost real. It added cushions so comfy, you’d want to nap on them all day!
When everything was finished, the room was the most beautiful room anyone had ever seen. The Prince looked at the girl. "You truly are the poorest, for you came with so little," he said. "And you are indeed the richest, for your skills and your heart have created such wonder and beauty. You are the one I have been searching for!"
And so, the Prince and the clever girl were married. They lived happily in the grand castle, and the spindle, the shuttle, and the needle were always treasured, reminding them that true riches come from a kind heart and willing hands.
