Lucky Peter
Andersen's Fairy Tales
Imagine a pair of shiny black shoes, so ordinary you might walk right past them. But these weren't just any shoes! They were magic shoes, left behind by two fairy sisters. One fairy, Lady Joy, loved to see people happy. The other, Lady Worry, often sighed about things going wrong. "Whoever wears these shoes," Lady Joy had giggled, "will have their biggest wish come true for a little while!"
Soon, a very serious man named Mr. Fussy came along. He was always complaining. "Oh, how I wish I lived in the good old days!" he grumbled, spotting the shoes and slipping them on. *Poof!* Suddenly, Mr. Fussy was standing on a muddy street. Knights in clanky armor pushed past him. The houses were small and dark. There were no comfy sofas, no electric lights, and dinner was just lumpy porridge. "Oh dear!" he cried. "This isn't good at all! It's smelly and uncomfortable! I wish I was back in my own time!" And just like that, the shoes slipped off, and he was.
Next, a night watchman named Tom found the shoes. Tom was always tired. "If only I were the rich Mayor," he yawned, putting on the shoes. *Zoom!* Tom was sitting in a big, fancy chair, wearing a gold chain. But people kept rushing in. "Mr. Mayor, the bridge is broken!" "Mr. Mayor, the baker has no flour!" Tom’s head started to spin. "This is too much work!" he groaned. "I just want my quiet night watch again!" The shoes came off, and Tom was back on his peaceful street.
Then, a young student named Leo, who loved books but had very little money, saw the shoes. "I wish I could travel the world and see amazing things!" he whispered, stepping into them. *Whirl!* Leo found himself on a ship, sailing to faraway lands. But a big storm came! Waves crashed, the wind howled, and Leo felt very seasick and scared. "This is too exciting!" he gulped. "I just want to be safe in my little room with my books!" And so he was, the shoes lying beside him.
Finally, a cheerful young boy named Peter, who didn't have much but was always smiling, came skipping by. He saw the shoes. "Oh, new shoes!" he said. "I wish I could fly like a bird, just for a moment, to see the town from up high!" He put them on. *Whoosh!* Peter gently floated up into the air! He soared over the rooftops, waved at the birds, and saw his whole town spread out like a toy set. It was wonderful! After a few happy moments, he thought, "That was lovely! Now I wish I was back on the ground to play with my friends." And down he floated, safe and sound.
Peter took off the magic shoes, feeling happier than ever. He didn't need grand wishes to be content. Lady Joy smiled from afar. Sometimes, the simplest wishes, or just being happy with what you have, are the best kind of magic. And the shoes? They vanished, perhaps waiting for others to learn the same lesson.
