The Green Pearls
Andersen's Fairy Tales
In a cozy little room, a young girl wasn't feeling her best. She coughed a little and often felt too tired to play. Her mother worried and hoped she would get well soon.
Meanwhile, not too far away, five green peas were having a chat inside their snug green pod.
"The world must be amazing!" said the first pea. "I'm going to fly out and see everything!"
"I'm going to fly straight to the sun!" declared the second pea, who had big ideas.
Two other peas agreed, "We'll just roll wherever we end up!"
The fifth little pea was a bit quieter. "What will be, will be," he thought to himself.
One sunny afternoon, a boy plucked their pod from the vine. SNAP! He opened it. The peas were perfect for his little peashooter.
PING! Out shot the first pea. "I'm flying!" he yelled, right before a pigeon swooped down and... GULP!
PING! Out shot the second pea. "To the sun!" he aimed, but he landed with a plop in the roof gutter. He got soaked and swelled up, but he was still just a pea in a gutter.
PING! PING! The next two peas shot out. "Adventure!" they cried, but two more pigeons found them to be a tasty snack.
PING! The last little pea flew through the air. He landed gently in a crack of soft earth and moss, right beneath the window of the sick little girl.
The little pea lay there. Rain fell, and the sun shone. Soon, something amazing happened. A tiny green sprout pushed out from the pea! Then another! It began to grow into a small, green plant.
One morning, the little girl, feeling a bit stronger, looked out her window. "Oh, Mama!" she exclaimed, her voice a little brighter. "Look! A little green plant is growing there!"
Her mother smiled. "How lovely, dear."
Every day, the girl watched the plant. It grew taller and stronger, reaching for the sun. Her mother tied a little string for it to climb. Watching the brave little plant gave the girl hope. She started to feel a bit better, then a lot better. Soon, the plant even had a delicate pink flower!
The little girl started to smile more. She sat up in bed to draw. Then, she was walking around her room. The sight of the green plant, growing so cheerfully, had helped her feel cheerful too. She was getting well!
And the empty pea pod? The boy who had the peashooter had given it to the girl. She thought it was a very special pod, because it once held the little pea that grew into her hopeful plant. She kept it carefully tucked inside her favorite storybook, a reminder of the little green helper that bloomed outside her window.
