• The Little Green Thing

    Andersen's Fairy Tales
Snug inside their cozy green home, lived five little peas. Their home was a long, green pod, and everything they saw was green. "The whole world must be green!" they thought. They sat in a row, like tiny green marbles.

"I wonder what's out there?" said one little pea.
"I bet it's exciting!" whispered another.
A third pea, who was a bit of a dreamer, imagined flying like a bird.
The fourth pea just wanted to stay comfy.
But the fifth pea, the smallest one, said, "Whatever happens, I hope I can be useful!"

Days went by. The sun warmed their pod. It turned from green to yellow. Then one day, POP! The pod burst open.
Whee! The five peas flew out into the bright, wide world.

One pea landed in a boy's peashooter – zing! Off he went on an adventure.
Two rolled into a pigeon's beak – gobble, gobble! They became pigeon lunch.
Another fell into the gutter and was washed away by the rain.

But our special little pea, the fifth one, landed gently. He tumbled into a crack on a dusty, old rooftop, right next to an attic window. There was a bit of soft earth and moss there, just enough to nestle in.

Inside the room by that window lived a little girl. She was often sick and had to stay in her small bed. Her mother tried her best to cheer her up with stories and songs, but the girl felt sad and weak. The world outside her window seemed grey.

One morning, the girl looked out her window. "Oh, Mama!" she whispered, her voice a little stronger. "Look! A little green thing!"

It was our little pea, sprouting! He had pushed a tiny green shoot up towards the sun.
Every day, the girl watched the little plant. It grew taller. It unfurled tiny leaves. She propped herself up on her pillows to see it better. "It's growing for me," she thought with a small smile.

The little green plant gave her hope. It was something bright and alive to look forward to each day. Her mother even tied a little string from the window frame to the roof so the plant could climb.

Soon, a delicate flower bloomed on the plant – a pretty pea blossom, pink and white. The girl clapped her hands softly.

Seeing the plant grow strong made the little girl feel stronger too. She started to sit up more, then to walk around her room. The sunshine that helped the plant seemed to help her too. Her cheeks got a little rosier.

One day, the doctor came and said, "My dear, you're much better! You can go out and play soon!"
The little girl smiled, a big, happy smile. She looked at the pea plant, which now had a tiny new pod forming. "Thank you, little green friend," she whispered.

The pea plant, with its own little family starting, felt a warm glow. It had done something wonderful. It had brought joy and helped a little girl get well. And that, the little pea thought, was the best adventure of all.
