The Jewish Girl
Andersen's Fairy Tales
Imagine a little room, tucked away beneath a big house, where the sunshine only visited for a short while each day. This was where a girl named Sarah lived with her family. They didn't have much, but they had each other.
Now, in Sarah's town, there was a big, beautiful church with tall windows and a steeple that reached for the sky. All the children in town were buzzing like happy bees because it was almost time for a special day at the church, a day when they would wear their best clothes and feel very grown-up. Sarah wished, oh how she wished, she could see inside that grand church. But her family worshipped in a different way, in their own quiet place.
Still, the thought of the church, with its music and light, tugged at her heart. Her mother, seeing Sarah's longing, had managed to get her a pair of brand-new shoes. They weren't fancy, but to Sarah, they felt like the most special shoes in the world. They were sturdy and new, and she couldn't wait to wear them.
On the special Sunday, Sarah put on her new shoes and walked towards the big church. She stood outside, just peeking. The sounds of singing drifted out. A kind old woman with a smile as warm as a summer's day saw Sarah standing there, looking a little shy. "Would you like to come in, dear?" she asked gently.
Sarah's heart did a little flip! She nodded, and the old woman led her inside. Her eyes grew wide. Sunlight streamed through colorful windows, painting rainbows on the floor. Beautiful music floated in the air, like happy birds singing. It was even more wonderful than she had imagined.
But then, Sarah looked down at her new shoes. They seemed to shine a little brighter in the church light. She wiggled her toes. Did her shoes want to tap along to the music? It was a funny thought, and it made her forget to listen to the important words being spoken. She felt a little bit silly, thinking about her shoes when everyone else was so serious and focused. She hoped no one noticed her wiggling toes.
Many days later, when Sarah was not feeling very well and was resting in her little room, the sunbeam came to visit. It lay across her blanket like a warm, golden stripe. She remembered the big church, the music, and her new shoes. She remembered feeling a bit out of place, but also the kindness of the old woman.
As she lay there, the little room seemed to fill with a soft, gentle light, even brighter than the sunbeam. It felt warm and kind, like a loving hug. A voice, soft as a whisper, seemed to say, "Little one, you are loved. Everyone is loved."
Sarah smiled. The sunbeam on the wall seemed to dance, and she knew, deep in her heart, that the biggest, most wonderful things, like kindness and love, were for everyone, everywhere, no matter who they were or what shoes they wore. And that made her feel very peaceful and happy.
