• A Picture Book Without Pictures

    Andersen's Fairy Tales
Guess who has the best view in the whole wide world? The Moon, of course! Every night, it floats high above, shining its gentle light on sleepy towns and bustling cities, quiet forests and wide, sparkling oceans.

One evening, the Moon peeked into a tiny attic window. Inside, a young man sat at a small table. He looked a little bit sad, and his room was very plain. He was an artist, but his pencils and paints weren't feeling very inspired.

"Hello down there!" the Moon seemed to whisper, its light growing a little brighter. The young man looked up, surprised. "I see so many wonderful things on my nightly journey," the Moon continued, its voice like a soft, silvery chime. "Would you like me to tell you about them? You can draw them, and it will be like a special picture book, one made of my stories."

The young man's eyes lit up. "Oh, yes please!" he said.

So, the very next night, the Moon returned. "Tonight," it began, "I saw a little girl in a faraway land called India. She was wearing a dress as colorful as a parrot's feathers, and she was dancing by a sparkling river while playful monkeys watched from the trees."

The artist listened carefully, and then he began to sketch. His pencil danced across the paper!

Every night, the Moon shared a new scene. One night, it was about a brave little boat tossing on a big, dark sea, with a tiny light shining from its mast. Another night, it was about children in China flying colorful dragon kites that soared high into the sky. Sometimes, the Moon told of quiet, snowy landscapes where only the stars seemed awake, or busy city streets where people hurried home under umbrellas.

The young man’s room slowly filled with pictures. He drew and painted everything the Moon described. He wasn't sad anymore. His heart was full of stories and colors.

"These are my gifts to you," the Moon would say. "My picture book without any pictures I draw myself, but full of sights for your imagination."

And so, the Moon keeps traveling, watching the world below. And who knows? Maybe tonight, it’s looking down, ready to share a brand new story with someone just like you.
