Moving Day
Andersen's Fairy Tales
There once stood a very, very old house, squeezed between two brand-new ones. It had a pointy roof, windows that looked like sleepy eyes, and a big wooden door that creaked like an old grandpa laughing. The new houses next door were all shiny and straight. They often whispered to each other, "Look at that old thing! It’s so out of date!"
Across the street lived a little boy with bright, curious eyes. His name was Alex. He didn't think the old house was out of date. He thought it was mysterious and wonderful. One day, the creaky door opened, and an old man with a kind smile and twinkly eyes waved at him.
Alex waved back. Soon, Alex was visiting the old man almost every day. The inside of the old house was like a treasure chest! There were tall clocks that went "tick-tock, bong!", comfy chairs with soft, faded flowers, and pictures of people in funny old clothes on the walls. The old man would tell Alex stories about everything. "This chair," he’d say, "has seen a hundred birthday parties!"
Alex’s favorite thing was a little tin soldier, standing very straight and proud on a dusty shelf. He only had one leg, but he looked very brave. The old man said the soldier had been on many adventures.
But one sunny morning, the old house was very quiet. The old man wasn't there anymore. He had gone on a very long journey, people said, and wouldn't be coming back. Alex felt a big sadness in his heart.
Then, big trucks arrived. Men started taking things out of the old house. "It's moving day for the house," someone told Alex. "It's going to be taken down." Alex felt a big lump in his throat. He would miss the old house and the old man terribly.
Just then, one of the men handed Alex a small package. Inside was the little tin soldier! "The old gentleman wanted you to have this," the man said with a kind smile. Alex held the soldier tight.
He watched, feeling sad, as the old house was carefully taken apart, piece by piece. The sleepy windows were gone, the creaky door was carried away, and soon, only an empty space was left.
In its place, a new, modern house was built. It was very smart and clean, with big, clear windows and a bright, shiny door. But Alex still missed the creaky door and the sleepy windows of his old friend, the house.
Years went by. Alex grew up. He got married and, guess what? He and his wife came to live in the very new house that stood where the old one used to be! It was a lovely house, full of light and new things.
But on a special shelf in his study, Alex kept the little tin soldier. Sometimes, he would pick it up and remember the kind old man, the treasure-filled rooms, and the stories. The tin soldier stood proudly, a little reminder of a house that was full of history and friendship. And even in a brand-new house, that was something very special indeed.
