• The Golden Treasure

    Andersen's Fairy Tales
Listen closely, and I'll tell you about a boy named Peter. Peter wasn't a prince, oh no! He was a drummer boy, and his drum went rat-a-tat-tat, making everyone tap their feet. He had a cheerful smile and a heart full of sunshine, even when the clouds were grey.

One wild, windy night, when the trees were dancing like crazy giants and the rain came down in buckets, Peter was marching with his fellow soldiers. The storm was so fierce they had to find shelter. Peter spotted a huge, old oak tree with a hollow big enough to crawl inside. "Perfect!" he thought, and snuggled in, his drum beside him.

As lightning flashed, something inside the hollow glinted. Peter reached out. It was smooth and cool. When the next flash lit up the sky, he saw it – a beautiful, shiny golden horn! It wasn't a noisy trumpet, but a small, elegant horn, gleaming as if it held sunlight inside.

Peter tucked the golden horn safely into his jacket. The next day, when he played his drum, his rhythms were livelier, his beats more joyful than ever before. People said, "Peter's drumming is magical today!" His family, who were quite poor, suddenly found a little extra food on their table. When Peter was near, flowers seemed to bloom brighter, and grumpy faces turned into smiles.

News of the cheerful drummer boy and his amazing luck reached the King. "Bring this boy to me!" boomed the King. So Peter, with his drum and the secret golden horn, went to the palace. He played his drum for the King and the Princess. The Princess, whose name was Lily, had never heard such happy music. She clapped her hands and her eyes sparkled.

Peter didn't blow the golden horn, not yet. He just kept it close. But good things kept happening. The kingdom's crops grew tall, the people were happy, and Peter became a hero, not for fighting, but for spreading joy with his music.

Princess Lily and Peter became good friends. She loved his stories and his kind ways, and he loved her bright laughter. Soon, they decided to get married! Everyone cheered. Peter was a drummer boy who became a prince, all because of his good heart and, perhaps, a little help from a golden treasure.

Years later, the golden horn was carefully placed in the royal treasury. Some say it still brought good fortune to the land. But Peter knew, and Princess Lily knew, that the real magic wasn't just in the horn. The true golden treasure was Peter's own cheerful spirit, his kindness, and the happy music he shared with everyone. That was a treasure that made the whole kingdom shine.
