The Sunbeam and the Captive
Andersen's Fairy Tales
One morning, the Sun peeked over the sleepy hills and stretched out its golden arms. One of these arms, a cheerful little Sunbeam, decided to go on an adventure. "Whee!" it thought, as it danced down towards the green Earth.
The Sunbeam landed right on the leaf of a giant, old Oak Tree. This Oak Tree had seen so many seasons, it had lost count! It was autumn, and the air was getting a little chilly.
Just then, something tiny wiggled on a nearby leaf. Pop! Out came a little creature with delicate, see-through wings. It was a Mayfly, fresh and new to the world.
"Hello, world!" buzzed the Mayfly, fluttering its wings in the Sunbeam's warm glow. "This is amazing! I feel so light and happy! I could dance forever!"
The Sunbeam shone a little brighter on the Mayfly. "Welcome, little friend!" said the Sunbeam, its voice like a warm whisper. "It's a beautiful day to dance, isn't it?"
"It is!" chirped the Mayfly. "I will dance and fly and see everything! And tomorrow, I'll do it all again!"
The Sunbeam felt a little sad, but it spoke gently. "Dear Mayfly," it said, "your life is very special. You have this whole, wonderful day to enjoy. You will dance and fly until I, the Sunbeam, go to sleep with the Sun tonight. Your whole life is this one, perfect day."
The Mayfly stopped dancing. Its tiny antennae drooped. "Only one day?" it whispered. "But... but I just got here!"
"Yes," said the Sunbeam softly. "But what a day it will be! Full of sunshine, breezes, and all the flowers you can visit."
The Mayfly thought for a moment. Then, its wings started to flutter again. "You're right!" it buzzed, a little brighter now. "If I only have one day, I will make it the BEST day ever!" And so it did. It danced with the wind, sipped nectar from late-blooming flowers, and greeted every ladybug and ant it met. The Sunbeam stayed with it, making everything sparkle.
As the Sun began to set, painting the sky in orange and purple, the old Oak Tree shivered. It was getting cold. The Oak Tree started to dream. It dreamed its old branches were turning into mighty wings, and it was lifting, lifting up from the ground.
The little Mayfly, tired from its wonderful day, felt sleepy too. In the Oak Tree's dream, the Sunbeam gently picked up the Mayfly. Together, the great Oak Tree and the tiny Mayfly soared up, up, above the clouds, into a place filled with soft light.
The next morning, a new Sunbeam came down. The old Oak Tree stood very, very still. A strong wind in the night had been too much for it. And the little Mayfly was nowhere to be seen; its one perfect day was over.
But the new Sunbeam knew. It knew that somewhere, in a beautiful, dreamy place, the spirit of the old Oak Tree and the happy little Mayfly were still together, enjoying an endless, sunny adventure. And that made the Sunbeam smile as it started its own day on Earth.
