• The Bottleneck

    Andersen's Fairy Tales
Deep inside a noisy, hot glass factory, a brand new bottle was born. It was shiny and clear, and very, very proud. "I'm going to hold something wonderful!" it thought. "Maybe sparkling grape juice, or the finest wine!"

And it did! Soon, it was filled with rich, red wine. A cork was popped in tight, and a fancy label was stuck on its side. "Ah, this is the life!" the bottle gleamed. Off it went, on a big ship, sailing across the wavy sea. At a grand party, the wine was poured, and everyone said, "Delicious!" The bottle felt very important. Then, empty and a little sticky, the bottle was tossed aside.

"Oh dear," it worried. "Is this the end?"

But its story wasn't over! A man found it and took it to an apothecary shop – that’s like an old-fashioned pharmacy. This time, it was filled with bitter medicine. "Ugh," thought the bottle, "this isn't as fun as wine." But it helped a sick person get better, which was a very important job. Then, empty again, it was put on a dusty shelf.

For a long, long time, the bottle sat in a dark, quiet attic. Cobwebs grew on it. It felt a bit lonely. It remembered the sunshine, the parties, and even the bitter medicine. "Oh, my adventures are over," it sighed. It saw other forgotten things – a leaky teapot, a three-legged stool. They all had stories.

One sunny morning, a little girl was exploring the attic. "Look, Mama!" she cried, "A pretty bottle!" They washed it carefully. All the dust and cobwebs disappeared. The bottle felt brand new again!

They took it out to the garden and filled it with fresh water. Then, they hung it from a tree branch, upside down with a little spout, so birds could drink from it.

Soon, little birds came to drink. Chirp, chirp! They seemed to say thank you. The bottle wasn't holding fancy wine or important medicine anymore. But it felt happier than ever, watching the birds flutter and feeling the warm sunshine. It learned that even a simple job could bring great joy, and being useful was the best adventure of all.
