• Nuwa Creates Humanity

    Chinese Mythology
Way back, when the Earth was young and sparkly, there lived a super-duper goddess named Nüwa. She had a long, swishy tail like a friendly dragon. Nüwa loved the world. She loved the tall mountains, the sparkly rivers, and the fluffy clouds. But... it was a bit too quiet. There were no giggles, no songs, and no one to play hide-and-seek with.

"Hmm," Nüwa thought, tapping her chin. "This beautiful world needs some friends!"

So, Nüwa went down to a riverbank where the mud was soft and yellow, like yummy banana pudding. She scooped up a handful of the yellow mud and started to squish it and shape it. Squish, squish, pat, pat. She carefully made a little figure with a head, two arms, and two legs. It looked a bit like her, but smaller and without a tail.

Nüwa smiled at her creation. She gently blew a puff of her special goddess breath onto the little mud figure. POP! The little figure wiggled, blinked its eyes, and then started to dance and shout, "Hello!"

Nüwa was so happy! "Hello to you too!" she giggled. She made another one, and another one. Each one she made by hand was very clever and special. They chattered and played, and Nüwa’s heart felt warm.

But making people one by one was very slow work. Nüwa’s hands got tired. "Oh dear," she thought, looking at the big, empty world. "This will take forever! I want lots and lots of friends for the world, and quickly!"

Then, Nüwa had another super-duper idea! She found a long, bendy vine, like a jump rope. She dipped the vine into the muddy water. Swish, swish! The vine was covered in gloopy mud.

Then, with a big WHOOSH, Nüwa flicked the muddy vine! Little drops of mud flew everywhere. And guess what? Each little mud drop that landed on the ground turned into a person! Plip, plop, POP! More people! These people weren't quite as carefully made as the first ones, but they were just as lively and happy.

Soon, the world wasn't quiet anymore. It was full of happy voices, laughter, and little feet running around. Some people were building little houses, others were singing songs, and some were splashing in the river.

Nüwa watched them all, her heart full of joy. She taught them how to find food, how to make things, and most importantly, how to be kind to each other. And so they could make more people themselves and fill the world, she taught them how to have families.

Nüwa smiled. The world was finally complete, full of life and joy, all thanks to her clever hands and a muddy vine! And that’s how the first people came to be.
