Pangu Opens Heaven
Chinese Mythology
Way, way back, even before your grandparents' grandparents were born, there was nothing but a giant, enormous egg. It was dark and wobbly, and everything was all mixed up inside.
Guess who was sleeping in that egg? A giant named Pangu! He slept for a super, super long time – thousands and thousands of years! Imagine sleeping through all your favorite cartoons and then some!
One day, Pangu woke up. Yawn! Stretch! He looked around. "My goodness," he thought, "it's a bit squishy in here!" It was dark, and he couldn't move much. Pangu didn't like being cooped up.
So, Pangu gave a mighty PUSH! And then another PUSH! With a big, strong heave, CRACK! The giant egg broke open!
The light, floaty parts of the egg drifted up, up, up, and became the beautiful blue sky. The heavy, lumpy parts sank down, down, down, and became the solid Earth.
Pangu stood in the middle. He was worried. "What if the sky falls down and squishes the Earth?" he thought. So, he decided to hold them apart. He put his feet firmly on the Earth and pushed the sky up with his strong hands.
Every single day, the sky rose a little higher, and the Earth grew a little thicker. And guess what? Pangu grew taller too! He grew and grew, pushing the sky further and further away from the Earth. He did this for a very, very, very long time – maybe eighteen thousand years! That's a lot of birthdays!
Finally, the sky was very high, and the Earth was very thick and strong. They wouldn't get mixed up again. Pangu looked around. He had done a good job! But oh, he was so, so tired. He had worked harder than anyone ever.
Pangu lay down to rest. He was so tired that he fell into a deep, deep sleep, and he never woke up.
But even though Pangu was gone, he gave us the most wonderful gifts!
His breath became the wind that rustles the leaves and the fluffy clouds that float in the sky.
His voice became the loud boom-boom-boom of thunder.
His left eye twinkled and became the bright, warm sun.
His right eye glowed softly and became the gentle, silvery moon.
His arms and legs became the tall, strong mountains.
His blood flowed and became the rushing rivers and wide oceans.
His hair became the twinkling stars in the night sky and all the green grass and colorful flowers on the Earth.
Even his sweat became the morning dew on the grass and the soft rain that helps plants grow.
And that's how, thanks to the sleepy giant Pangu and his big push, our wonderful world was made, with its sky, Earth, sun, moon, and everything in between!
