• Covering One's Ears While Stealing a Bell

    Chinese Fables
One sunny morning, a fellow named Pip was walking down a street when he saw something amazing. Hanging outside a big house was a giant, shiny bronze bell. "Wow!" Pip thought. "That bell is so beautiful. I want it!"

The bell was very, very big and very, very heavy. Pip knew he couldn't carry it away. "Hmm," he thought, scratching his head. "If I break it into smaller pieces, then I can take it home!"

He found a big hammer and WHACK! He hit the bell.
CLANG! DONG! BONG! The bell made a super loud noise.
"Oh dear!" Pip whispered. "That's so loud! Everyone will hear me and know I'm trying to take the bell!"

Pip thought and thought. Then, he had an idea. It wasn't a very good idea, but Pip thought it was brilliant. "I know!" he said to himself. "If I cover my ears, I won't hear the bell. And if *I* can't hear it, then nobody else can hear it either!"

So, Pip covered his ears very tightly with his hands. Then, he picked up the hammer again. WHACK! WHACK! WHACK!
CLANG! DONG! BONG! CLANG! DONG! BONG!
Pip couldn't hear a thing. "Perfect!" he thought with a smile. "It's so quiet now."

But of course, even though Pip couldn't hear the bell, everyone else in the neighborhood could! People came running out of their houses. "What's all that noise?" they shouted.
They saw Pip, with his ears covered, happily whacking the bell.
They caught him right away. Pip was very surprised. He really thought that if he couldn't hear it, no one could. But of course, everyone did!
