The Dog and the Oyster
Aesop's Fables
Barnaby the Beagle was a dog who loved snacks. His favorite snack of all? Eggs! He knew just how to find them, tap them gently, and slurp up the yummy insides. He thought he was an egg expert.
One sunny afternoon, Barnaby was trotting along the seashore, his nose twitching for a tasty treat. Suddenly, he spotted something nestled in the wet sand. It was roundish and a bit greyish-white.
"Aha!" barked Barnaby to himself. "That looks like a giant, super-special egg! What a lucky day!"
He was so excited about this new kind of "egg" that he didn't even bother to tap it. He just opened his mouth wide, and GULP! He swallowed it whole.
But oh, dear. That was not an egg. It was an oyster, with a very hard shell!
Soon, Barnaby’s tummy started to feel very, very strange. It rumbled. It grumbled. It felt like a heavy stone was sitting right in the middle of him.
"Oof! Ouch!" he whimpered, lying down on the sand. "My tummy hurts so much!"
Barnaby learned a big lesson that day. He realized that not everything round and whitish is a delicious egg, and it’s probably a good idea to check what something is before you swallow it in one big gulp! From then on, he was a little more careful about his seaside snacks.
