• Ratatoskr the Squirrel

    Norse Mythology
Imagine a tree so gigantic, its branches reached up to the fluffy clouds and its roots dug deep, deep into the earth. This wasn't just any tree; it was Yggdrasil, the World Tree, and it was a very busy place!

Way up in the highest, sunniest branches lived a magnificent Eagle. This Eagle had eyes that could see for miles and a very proud squawk. And far, far below, wrapped around the tree's deepest roots, lived a grumpy, scaly dragon named Nidhogg. Nidhogg was always chewing on the roots, which didn't make the tree very happy.

Now, who do you think lived in between? A little, furry, super-speedy squirrel named Ratatoskr! Ratatoskr had a very special, and some might say, very cheeky job. He was a messenger! But he didn't just carry ordinary messages.

The Eagle, feeling grand up in his treetop perch, might call out, "Ratatoskr, little fellow! Scurry down and tell that Nidhogg he's a grumpy root-muncher and his scales are dull!"

Ratatoskr, with a flick of his bushy tail, would zoom down the enormous trunk of Yggdrasil. Clickety-clack went his tiny claws on the bark. When he reached Nidhogg, he’d whisper, perhaps adding a little extra pepper to the message, "Ooh, Mr. Nidhogg! The Eagle says you're the grumpiest dragon ever and your breath smells like old leaves!"

Nidhogg would rumble and hiss, smoke puffing from his nostrils. "Oh, does he now? Well, you scamper right back up there, little whisker-face, and tell that feathered show-off his singing is terrible and he looks silly preening all day!"

And zoom! Up Ratatoskr would dash, faster than you can blink. "Mr. Eagle, sir!" he'd chatter. "Nidhogg says your songs sound like a squeaky door and you spend too much time looking at yourself!"

Ratatoskr secretly loved all this back-and-forth. He found it quite exciting to stir things up a bit between the grumpy dragon below and the proud eagle above. He’d listen carefully to their annoyed grumbles and squawks, his whiskers twitching with delight.

So, day in and day out, Ratatoskr the squirrel dashed up and down the World Tree, carrying not-so-nice words, keeping the top and bottom of Yggdrasil in a constant, chattering fuss. He was a very busy, and a tiny bit mischievous, little messenger of the great tree.
