• The Stag and the Lion

    Aesop's Fables
In a quiet part of the woods, where sunbeams danced on the leaves, a handsome Stag went to a clear pool for a drink. As he bent his head, he saw himself in the water.

"Wow!" he thought, looking at his reflection. "My antlers are amazing! They are like a big, beautiful crown on my head. So strong and grand!" He tossed his head proudly, making the water ripple.

Then, he looked down at his legs. "Oh," he sighed. "But look at these legs. So thin and spindly. They don't look strong at all. They're quite plain, really." He wished his legs were as impressive as his antlers.

Suddenly, a deep ROAR echoed through the trees! A Lion!

The Stag didn't wait a second. He turned and ran as fast as he could. His thin, spindly legs carried him like the wind. He zoomed over the open ground, leaving the Lion far behind. "Goodness me!" he panted. "These legs are actually very fast! They're saving me!"

He was so proud of his speedy legs now. But as he dashed into a thicker part of the forest, his magnificent antlers, the ones he loved so much, got tangled in the low branches of a tree. He pulled and twisted, but he was stuck fast!

The Lion, who had been catching up, saw him struggling.

"Oh dear," thought the Stag, his heart sinking. "My beautiful antlers, the ones I thought were so wonderful, have trapped me. And my plain, skinny legs, the ones I didn't like, were the very things trying to save my life!"

And soon, the Lion reached him.
