The Crab and the Fox
Aesop's Fables
On a beach, where the waves tickled the sand, lived a little Crab. Most days, he was happy scuttling sideways in the cool, salty water, finding tasty bits to eat among the seaweed.
But one sunny morning, the Crab looked up at the dry land. "Hmm," he thought to himself, clicking his claws. "The sea is nice, but that sunny beach looks like fun too! I bet I can find even better snacks up there."
So, with a brave little heart, he climbed out of the water and onto the warm sand. He walked sideways, just like he did in the sea, feeling very proud of himself. "Look at me!" he thought. "A sea crab exploring the land! This is exciting!" He wandered further and further away from the ocean.
Now, hiding behind a grassy dune, a sly Fox was feeling quite hungry. His sharp eyes spotted the little Crab taking a stroll all by himself. The Fox licked his lips. "Well, well," he whispered. "What have we here? A little sea creature far from home."
The Fox crept quietly closer. The Crab was so busy admiring the land and thinking about new adventures that he didn't see the Fox at all.
Suddenly, pounce! The Fox snatched up the poor Crab in his jaws.
"Oh dear!" thought the Crab, much too late. "I should have stayed in the sea where I belong and where I am safe. This land adventure wasn't such a good idea after all."
And the Fox had a quick and easy breakfast, all because the little Crab had wandered too far from where he was meant to be.
