• The Farmer and Fortune

    Aesop's Fables
The sun was shining brightly on Farmer Giles's field. He was a hardworking man, and today he was digging a new patch of ground to plant some extra carrots. His shovel went *thunk* into the soil, again and again. Sweat beaded on his forehead.

Suddenly, *CLINK!* His shovel hit something hard.
"Oh my!" he exclaimed, wiping his brow. "What's this then?"
He dug carefully around the object. It was an old, heavy pot. And when he lifted the lid, his eyes went wide. It was filled to the brim with shiny gold coins!
"Hooray!" shouted Farmer Giles, jumping up and down. "Oh, thank you, wonderful Earth! Thank you for giving me this amazing treasure from your soil!" He patted the ground happily.

Just then, a shimmering light appeared, and a beautiful lady dressed in sparkling clothes stood before him. She had a kind smile, but she also looked a little bit thoughtful.
"Excuse me, Farmer Giles," she said, her voice like gentle wind chimes.
Farmer Giles was so surprised he nearly dropped the pot. "Oh! Who... who are you?"
"I am Lady Luck," she replied. "And I couldn't help but overhear you."
"Oh, hello, Lady Luck!" said Farmer Giles, still beaming. "Isn't this wonderful? The Earth gave me treasure!"
Lady Luck tilted her head. "The Earth is very generous, it's true. But tell me, Farmer Giles, if you had dug all day and found nothing but rocks, or if a big storm came and washed away all your new seeds, who would you say was to blame?"
Farmer Giles scratched his head. "Well, I suppose I'd say I had bad luck."
"Exactly!" said Lady Luck, her eyes twinkling. "You would blame *me*, Lady Luck, for the bad things. So, when something good like this happens, don't you think I deserve a little thank you too?"
Farmer Giles blinked. He thought about it. She was right. If things went wrong, he’d sigh and say, "Just my luck!"
He looked at the sparkling lady and then at the pot of gold. "You know what, Lady Luck," he said with a grin. "You are absolutely right! Thank you, thank you very much for this wonderful surprise!"
Lady Luck smiled warmly. "You're most welcome, Farmer Giles. Enjoy your good fortune!" And with another shimmer, she was gone.
Farmer Giles looked at his treasure, feeling very happy, and now, a little bit wiser too.
