The War of the Cats and the Mice
Aesop's Fables
In a big, old house, where the floorboards creaked and the wind whistled through the cracks, lived a whole lot of mice and a family of rather grumpy cats. For as long as anyone could remember, the cats and the mice had been at war. The cats were always trying to catch the mice, and the mice were always trying to sneak cheese without being caught. It was a constant game of chase, and to be honest, the cats were winning most of the time.
One day, the mice held a big meeting in the pantry. "This is terrible!" squeaked a brave little mouse. "We keep getting chased! We need a plan! We need generals to lead us!"
All the other mice agreed. "Yes, generals! Brave leaders!" they all chattered.
So, they chose the bravest and smartest-looking mice to be their generals. To make sure everyone knew who the generals were, these special mice decided to wear very tall, fancy hats made of colorful feathers and shiny bottle caps. They looked very important indeed, strutting around with their chins up.
The next time the cats came prowling, the mouse generals stood at the front, their tall hats wobbling. "Charge!" they squeaked, trying to sound very important.
The battle began! Fur flew (a little bit) and squeaks were heard. But soon, the cats were too much for them. "Retreat!" yelled one of the generals. All the ordinary mice, being small and quick, scurried back to their tiny mouse holes and were safe in a flash.
But oh dear! When the mouse generals tried to dash into the same small holes, their tall, fancy hats got stuck! Wiggle as they might, they couldn't squeeze through with those grand decorations on their heads.
And so, while the regular mice were safe and sound, the proud generals, with their very impressive but very impractical hats, were easily caught by the cats. It just goes to show, sometimes being plain and simple is the smartest way to be, especially when you need to make a quick getaway!
