• The Two Frogs

    Aesop's Fables
Splash! That was the sound of Freddie Frog jumping into his favorite pond. His best friend, Walter Frog, was right beside him, enjoying the cool water and the tasty flies. They lived in a lovely, squishy marsh, full of yummy bugs and cool water.

But one summer, the sun was extra, extra hot. Day after day, it blazed down, and their cozy marsh began to dry up. The mud got crackly, and the water got smaller and smaller.
"Oh dear," croaked Freddie, looking around. "Our home is disappearing!"
Walter nodded sadly. "We need to find a new place to live, Freddie. A place with lots of water."

So, the two little frogs packed their imaginary bags (frogs don't really have bags, you see) and set off on an adventure. Hop, hop, hop they went, looking for a new splashy spot.

After a while, they came to a deep, dark hole in the ground. It was a well! Peeking over the edge, they saw water glimmering way down at the bottom.
"Hooray!" shouted Freddie, his eyes wide with excitement. "Look, Walter! Water! Let's jump in! It looks so cool and refreshing!" He wiggled his toes, ready to leap.

Walter, who was a bit more thoughtful, peered down. "Hmm," he said, stroking his chin (if frogs had chins to stroke!). "It does look nice and cool down there, Freddie."
He paused. "But," Walter continued, "what if this well dries up too, just like our marsh? How would we ever get out? It's so deep, and the sides are so smooth. We wouldn't be able to hop out."

Freddie stopped wiggling his toes. He looked at Walter, then back down into the well. He hadn't thought of that. It was very, very deep.
"You're right, Walter," Freddie said slowly. "That wouldn't be good at all. We might get stuck."

So, the two wise little frogs decided not to jump into the deep well. They knew it was better to think things through before leaping into a new situation. They hopped on, looking for a safer place to live, one they could easily leave if they needed to. And eventually, they found a lovely new pond, not too deep, with plenty of lily pads and juicy flies.
