Six Make Their Way Through the World
Grimm's Fairy Tales
Imagine a soldier, a very brave one, who had just finished his time in the king's army. The king thanked him but gave him only three tiny coins. "Hmm," thought the soldier, "this won't buy many lollipops!"
As he walked along, feeling a bit glum, he met a man so strong, he was pulling up six big trees with his bare hands like they were carrots! "Wow!" said the soldier. "You're strong! Want to come with me?" The strong man grinned, "Sure!"
A little further, they saw a hunter aiming his rifle. "What are you shooting at?" asked the soldier. "A tiny fly," said the hunter, "on a mountain so far away, you can't even see the mountain!" "Amazing eyes!" said the soldier. "Join us!" The hunter agreed.
Next, they met a fellow hopping on one leg. "Why are you hopping?" asked the soldier. "Oh," he said, "I run so fast, I have to take one leg off to slow down! Otherwise, I'd be on the moon by now!" "Incredible!" said the soldier. "Come along!" And he did.
Soon, they met a man holding his nose. "What's wrong?" asked the soldier. "If I let go," he puffed, "I'll blow so hard, all the windmills in the country will spin backwards for a week!" "What a blower!" laughed the soldier. "You're in!"
Another man they met wore a hat, but it was tilted to one side. "Why do you wear your hat like that?" asked the soldier. "If I put it on straight," he shivered, "everything around would turn to ice, even in summer!" "Chilly!" said the soldier. "We need you!"
The last one they found was lying with his ear to the ground. "What are you listening to?" asked the soldier. "Shhh," he whispered, "I can hear the grass growing, and a ladybug sighing miles away!" "Super hearing!" said the soldier. "You complete our team!"
So the soldier and his six amazing friends went to a big city. The King there had a beautiful daughter. But he also had a strange rule. He said, "Anyone who can beat my daughter in a race can marry her. But if you lose, well, you won't be racing anyone ever again!"
"I'll race her!" said the Runner. The princess got a head start, carrying a small jug of water. The Runner zipped past her, then thought, "I'm so far ahead, I'll take a quick nap." He lay down and fell asleep.
The princess kept running. The Sharpshooter, miles away with the soldier, saw the Runner sleeping. "Oh no!" he cried. He aimed his rifle and shot a tiny pebble that landed right beside the Runner's ear. Ping! The Runner woke up, saw the princess far ahead, and zoomed off. He reached the finish line just as the princess was about to cross it, and won!
The King was not happy. "You won the race," he grumbled, "but you're not getting my daughter that easily! First, you and your friends must eat all the food in my royal kitchen!"
The Strongman grinned. "Leave it to me!" And he ate mountains of bread, seas of soup, and hills of cake until not a crumb was left. The others helped bring all the food to him.
"Hmph!" said the King. "Now, drink all the wine in my cellar!" The Strongman patted his tummy. "Still thirsty!" And he drank barrels and barrels of juice (it was a special kind of royal juice) until the cellar was dry.
"Grrr!" growled the King. "Now, you must all sit in a room heated by a giant fire for a whole day and night!" The man with the hat smiled. He straightened his hat just a tiny bit. A little frost appeared, and the fiery room became cool and comfy.
The King was furious! "Fine!" he roared. "Bring me a mountain of gold, and you can have the princess and be on your way!"
The Strongman found a giant bag. The soldier and his friends helped him fill it with all the King's gold. It was so heavy, only the Strongman could lift it.
As they were leaving, the King sent his army after them. "Oh no!" cried the soldier. But the man who could blow took a deep breath and WHOOSH! He blew the entire army away like autumn leaves.
The six friends and the soldier cheered. They had outsmarted the grumpy King. They shared the gold, and each went on to have wonderful adventures. And the soldier? He learned that with good friends and a bit of cleverness, you can solve any problem, no matter how big!
