• Freya and Brísingamen

    Norse Mythology
Way up high, in a land of rainbows and brave warriors called Asgard, lived a goddess named Freyja. Freyja was very beautiful, with long, golden hair and a smile that could make flowers bloom. She loved beautiful things, especially sparkly jewelry.

One day, Freyja was taking a walk near the mountains where the clever dwarves lived. These dwarves were amazing at making things! As she peeked into their workshop, deep under the ground, she saw it. The most wonderful necklace she had ever imagined! It shimmered with all the colors of the rainbow and sparkled like a thousand stars. It was called Brisingamen.

Freyja wanted that necklace more than anything. "Oh, clever dwarves!" she said. "That necklace is so beautiful! Will you sell it to me? I have lots of gold!"

The four dwarves, whose names were Alfrigg, Dvalin, Berling, and Grer, shook their heads. "Gold is nice," they said, "but we want something else for Brisingamen."

Freyja asked, "What could you possibly want?"

The dwarves whispered together. Then they said, "We want you to stay with us for four days and four nights. Each day, you must tell us wonderful stories about Asgard and the gods."

Freyja thought about it. Four whole days! But the necklace was so, so pretty. "Alright," she said. "I will."

So, Freyja stayed with the dwarves. She told them stories of Thor's hammer, Odin's wisdom, and the brave warriors. After four days and nights, the dwarves smiled and gave her the Brisingamen. Freyja put it on. Oh, it felt wonderful! She looked even more beautiful than before.

Now, in Asgard, there was also a god named Loki. Loki was very clever, but he also loved to play tricks and cause a little bit of trouble. He saw Freyja wearing her new, super sparkly necklace and got very curious. "Where did you get that, Freyja?" he asked, but Freyja just smiled and wouldn't tell him.

Loki, being sneaky, found out how Freyja got the necklace. He hurried to Odin, the king of all the gods. "Odin!" he said. "Do you know what Freyja did to get her new necklace?" And he told Odin the whole story.

Odin wasn't very happy. He thought Freyja had been a bit too eager to get the necklace. "Loki," Odin said, "you must bring me that necklace. Freyja needs to learn a lesson." Odin knew Freyja kept her bedroom door locked tight.

Loki, being a master of disguise, changed himself into a tiny, buzzing fly. He flew into Freyja’s room through the keyhole! Freyja was fast asleep, wearing the Brisingamen. The clasp was at the back of her neck. Loki, still a fly, buzzed near her cheek. Freyja, in her sleep, turned over. Perfect! Loki quickly changed back just enough to unfasten the clasp, grabbed the necklace, and zipped out before Freyja even stirred.

When Freyja woke up, her hand went to her neck. The necklace was gone! She knew, just KNEW, it had to be Loki. She rushed to Odin. "Odin! Loki stole my Brisingamen! You have to make him give it back!"

Odin looked at Freyja. "The necklace is beautiful, Freyja," he said. "But sometimes we want things so much, we forget what's truly important. I will tell Loki to return it, but only if you promise me something. You must promise to use your gifts of love and beauty not just for yourself, but to bring joy and help to others, and to always think carefully before making a big decision."

Freyja thought hard. She really missed her necklace, but she understood what Odin meant. "I promise, Odin," she said. "I will try my best."

Odin nodded, and soon Loki, grumbling a bit, had to give the Brisingamen back to Freyja. Freyja was overjoyed to have her necklace again. And from that day on, she remembered her promise, trying to spread happiness and always thinking a little more carefully about her choices, all while looking absolutely fabulous in her sparkling Brisingamen.
