• Thor and Mjolnir

    Norse Mythology
Imagine waking up one morning, reaching for your favorite toy, and... it's GONE! That's exactly what happened to Thor, the god of thunder. His super-strong hammer, Mjolnir, wasn't by his bed. Oh dear!

Thor was not happy. Not happy at all! He stomped his feet, and the clouds rumbled. "My hammer!" he boomed. His clever brother, Loki, who was always up to something, said, "Don't worry, big brother, I'll help you find it."

Loki knew just who to ask. He went to Freya, the beautiful goddess, and borrowed her special cloak made of falcon feathers. Whoosh! Loki flew off to the land of the giants, a place called Jotunheim.

There, he found Thrym, the king of the giants. Thrym was a big, boastful giant. "Yes, I have Thor's hammer!" he chuckled. "And I've hidden it deep, deep underground. If Thor wants it back, he has to give me Freya for my wife!"

Loki flew back to Asgard as fast as his feather cloak could carry him. When Freya heard Thrym's demand, she was furious! "Marry that giant? Never!" she declared, and her pretty necklace shook with anger.

All the gods and goddesses gathered. What could they do? Then, Heimdall, the god who could see and hear everything, had an idea. "Thor," he said, "you must dress up as Freya and go to Thrym!"

Thor gasped. "Me? In a dress? Looking like a bride? That's not very thunder-god-like!" But Loki grinned. "It's the only way, brother. And I'll come with you, dressed as your bridesmaid!"

So, they dressed Thor in a long wedding dress, put a veil over his face, and even borrowed Freya's necklace. He looked very... unusual. Off they went to Jotunheim, Thor the "bride" and Loki the "bridesmaid."

Thrym was overjoyed to see his "bride." He threw a huge feast. But "Freya" (Thor, of course) was very, very hungry. He ate a whole ox! Then eight salmon! Then all the cakes and sweets! And he drank three big barrels of mead!

"My goodness," said Thrym, "I've never seen a bride eat so much!" Quick-thinking Loki whispered, "Oh, she was so excited to marry you, she hasn't eaten for a whole week!"

Later, Thrym tried to peek under the veil for a kiss. He saw two fiery, angry eyes staring back! "Her eyes!" he gasped. Loki quickly said, "She's so excited, she hasn't slept for a week either!"

Thrym, eager to marry his "Freya," said, "Bring out the hammer Mjolnir! We'll use it to bless our wedding!" The giants brought the mighty hammer and placed it on the "bride's" lap.

That was Thor's chance! He grabbed Mjolnir. Rip! Off came the dress and veil. "SURPRISE!" roared Thor. He wasn't a bride anymore; he was the mighty god of thunder! With Mjolnir back in his hand, he quickly taught Thrym and the other giants a lesson they wouldn't forget.

Thor and Loki returned to Asgard, with the hammer safe and sound. And everyone (except the giants) was very happy indeed.
