The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea
Chinese Mythology
Have you ever heard of the Eight Immortals? They were a group of very special friends, each with their own amazing powers! One sunny day, they were all invited to a big, wonderful party on a faraway island called Penglai. Everyone was excited!
They walked and walked, and finally, they reached the edge of a huge, sparkling sea. The water stretched as far as their eyes could see. There were no boats in sight!
"Oh dear," said He Xiangu, who always carried a beautiful lotus flower. "How will we get across?"
Lü Dongbin, who was clever and carried a magic sword, smiled. "Hmm," he said, "instead of finding a boat, why don't we each use our own special magic to cross the sea? It will be much more fun!"
Everyone thought this was a fantastic idea!
First up was Tieguai Li. He had an iron crutch and a gourd full of magic. He tossed his crutch onto the water, and POOF! It turned into a little boat, just big enough for him. He hopped on and sailed away.
Next came Zhongli Quan, who had a big, round belly and a magical fan. He waved his fan over the water, and WHOOSH! A strong, steady breeze pushed a large leaf towards him, and he stepped onto it like a raft.
Then it was Zhang Guolao's turn. He was an old man who rode a funny paper donkey, often backwards! He patted his donkey, and it magically came to life, stepping onto the water and swimming gracefully, carrying him along.
Lü Dongbin himself went next. He took out his shiny sword, threw it onto the waves, and it grew bigger and flatter, like a speedy surfboard! He jumped on and zipped across.
He Xiangu smiled. She gently placed her lotus flower onto the sea. The flower opened its petals wide and became a lovely pink boat, carrying her smoothly over the water.
Lan Caihe, who always carried a basket of flowers, giggled. He tossed his basket into the sea, and it floated perfectly, like a little coracle. He hopped in, singing a happy tune.
Han Xiangzi, who played a magical flute, put his flute to his lips. He played a beautiful melody, and the music seemed to create a solid path on the water for him to walk on!
Last but not least was Cao Guojiu. He had a special pair of jade castanets (like clappers). He clicked them together, and they transformed into a sturdy raft, and off he went.
All this splashing and magical showing-off made quite a commotion! Deep down below, the Dragon King of the East Sea was taking a nap. "ROAR! Who is making all that noise and disturbing my sea?" he grumbled, sending some shrimp soldiers and crab generals to investigate.
But the Eight Immortals were not scared. They just smiled, and with a little bit of their combined magic, they gently shooed the sea creatures away. The Dragon King realized these were no ordinary people and decided it was best to let them pass.
Soon, all eight friends had crossed the wide sea, each in their own special way. They laughed and cheered on the other side, ready for the wonderful party. And that’s how the Eight Immortals showed everyone that there are many different, amazing ways to reach your goal!
