Mend the Fold After the Sheep Is Lost
Chinese Fables
Let me tell you about a farmer named Pip. Pip had a whole flock of fluffy, woolly sheep, and he loved them very much. They lived in a cozy pen behind his little cottage.
Now, one side of the sheep pen had a small hole in the fence. Pip noticed it, but he thought, "Oh, it's just a tiny hole. The sheep are too big to get through there."
The next morning, when Pip went to feed his sheep, he counted them. "One, two, three... oh dear! One sheep is missing!" He looked around and saw wool snagged on the edges of the hole. "It must have squeezed through that hole!" he sighed.
His neighbor, a wise old woman named Mrs. Gable, heard him. "Pip," she called over the fence, "I see you've lost a sheep. You should mend that hole in your fence right away, or you might lose another!"
Pip shook his head. "What's the use, Mrs. Gable? The sheep is already gone. It's too late to fix the fence for that one." And he went about his day, feeling a bit sad but not doing anything about the hole.
The very next morning, Pip went out to his sheep pen again. He counted, "One, two... oh no! Another sheep is gone!" He rushed to the fence and saw the hole was a little bigger. Two sheep were now missing!
Pip felt very silly. "Mrs. Gable was right," he mumbled to himself. "If I had fixed the hole yesterday, my second sheep would still be here. Losing one sheep was bad, but losing two is even worse!"
This time, Pip didn't wait a moment longer. He fetched his tools, some strong wood, and a hammer. Whack! Bang! Thump! He worked hard and carefully mended the hole in the fence, making it strong and secure. He even checked the rest of the fence to make sure there were no other weak spots.
From that day on, Pip always made sure his sheep pen was in perfect shape. And guess what? He never lost another sheep through a hole in the fence again. He learned that even if you've made a mistake and something has gone wrong, it's always a good idea to fix the problem so it doesn't happen again. It's never too late to make things right!
