• The Giant and the Tailor

    Grimm's Fairy Tales
One bright morning, a little tailor was sitting by his window, humming a tune and sewing a vest. Suddenly, a swarm of buzzing flies landed on his jam sandwich! "Shoo, flies!" he cried, and with a quick swat of a cloth – WHAP! – he hit seven of them all at once.
"Seven at one blow!" he exclaimed, very proud of himself. "The whole world must know about this!" So, he stitched a belt with big letters: "SEVEN AT ONE BLOW." He put a piece of cheese in one pocket, a little bird in another, and set off to seek his fortune.

He walked and walked until he came to a mountain. And there, sitting on a rock, was a giant! The giant looked down at the tiny tailor. "Well, well, what have we here?" boomed the giant.
The tailor puffed out his chest. "Read my belt, sir!"
The giant squinted. "SEVEN AT ONE BLOW? You must be very strong! Let's see."
The giant picked up a huge stone and squeezed it so hard that water dripped out. "Can you do that?"
"Pah! That's easy!" said the tailor. He pulled the cheese from his pocket and squeezed it. Milky liquid dripped out. "See?"
The giant was surprised. "Hmm. Not bad. Now, let's see you throw." He picked up another stone and threw it so high it almost disappeared into the clouds.
"Good," said the tailor, "but my throw will go so high, it won't even come back!" He took the little bird from his pocket and tossed it into the air. The bird, happy to be free, flew up, up, and away, never to be seen by them again.
The giant scratched his enormous head. "Amazing! You are strong. Let's try one more thing. Help me carry this oak tree I just cut down."
"Certainly," said the tailor. "You take the heavy trunk, and I'll carry all the branches and leaves. That's the trickiest part, you know."
So the giant heaved the trunk onto his shoulder, and the tailor hopped onto a big branch at the back, whistling a merry tune. The giant struggled along, thinking the little fellow was carrying the whole bushy top of the tree. "You really are something!" panted the giant.

The giant was so impressed he invited the tailor to his cave, where other giants lived. They offered the tailor a huge bed. But the tailor, suspecting they might not be friendly, found a cozy corner to sleep in instead, after putting a big log under the covers of the giant bed.
In the middle of the night, one of the giants took a massive iron bar and WHAM! Smashed it down right in the middle of the bed where he thought the tailor was sleeping.
The next morning, the tailor strolled out, yawning. "Good morning! Did anyone hear a little knock last night? I slept so soundly."
The giants stared. They thought they had crushed him! Believing he was too strong to be harmed, they were terrified and ran away from their own cave as fast as they could.

The little tailor continued his journey. News of his "strength" spread, and soon the King heard about the man who could defeat giants. The King was having trouble with two other fierce giants who were scaring everyone in the kingdom.
"Brave tailor," said the King, "if you can get rid of these two giants, you shall marry my daughter, the Princess, and have half my kingdom."
"It shall be done!" said the tailor.
He found the two giants sleeping under a tree. The tailor filled his pockets with stones. He climbed the tree and dropped a stone on the first giant's nose.
"Ouch! Why did you hit me?" growled the first giant, waking up.
"I didn't hit you! You're dreaming," said the second giant. They both went back to sleep.
The tailor then dropped a stone on the second giant.
"Hey! You hit me that time!" roared the second giant.
"No, I didn't!" shouted the first. They started arguing, then fighting, hitting each other with trees until they both fell down, completely exhausted and defeated. The tailor then went to the King.
"The giants are taken care of," he announced.
So, the tailor married the Princess. But after a while, the Princess heard him talking in his sleep. "Must finish this coat... just a few more stitches..." She realized he was just a tailor! She told her father, the King, who decided to have his men capture the tailor in the night.
But a loyal servant overheard the plan and warned the tailor.
That night, when the King's men were outside the door, the tailor pretended to be talking loudly in his sleep. "Boy! Go fetch the jacket I mended for the hero who struck SEVEN AT ONE BLOW! The one who defeated giants and won a kingdom! I'll smash anyone who tries to stop me!"
The men outside heard his booming voice and his brave words. They were so frightened they ran away and never dared to bother him again.
And so, the clever little tailor lived as a respected king for the rest of his days, all thanks to a few flies, some cheese, a little bird, and a very quick mind.
