The Little Shroud
Grimm's Fairy Tales
Not so long ago, in a quiet village, lived a mother who had a little boy. He was sweet and full of sunshine, and she loved him more than all the stars in the sky. They would play hide-and-seek in the meadow and tell silly stories until they both giggled.
But one day, the little boy got very, very sick. The doctor came, and the mother held his hand, but soon, he closed his eyes and didn't wake up again.
Oh, his poor mother! Her heart felt like it had broken into a million tiny pieces. She cried and cried, all day long and all through the night. She missed his laughter, his warm hugs, and even his messy fingerprints on the windows.
Then, something strange happened. One night, as she was crying, she saw a little figure standing by her bed. It was her little boy! He was wearing his little white nightgown, the one he was buried in. But his nightgown was all damp, as if it had been rained on.
"Mama," he whispered, his voice soft like a breeze, "please don't cry so much. Your tears are falling on my little nightgown and making it all wet. I can't sleep peacefully in my little bed under the ground when my nightgown is so soggy."
The mother was so surprised! She looked at her little boy, and her heart ached, but she understood. She wanted him to be comfortable and peaceful.
From that night on, the mother tried very hard. When she felt sad, she would remember her little boy's happy smile, but she didn't let her tears fall like a river anymore. She still missed him terribly, of course, but she tried to be brave for him.
The very next night, her little boy appeared again. This time, his little white nightgown was perfectly dry and clean. And in his hand, he held a tiny, bright light, like a little star.
He smiled at his mother and said, "See, Mama? Now my nightgown is dry, and I can rest. Thank you." And with a gentle wave, he faded away.
The mother's heart still felt a little sad, but it also felt a little bit lighter. She knew her little boy was peaceful now. And so, she learned to carry her sadness quietly, remembering all the happy times, knowing that love never truly goes away.
