Amaterasu and the Rock Cave of Heaven
Japanese Mythology
In a land high above the clouds, where the gods and goddesses lived, there was a very special goddess named Amaterasu. She was the goddess of the sun, and oh, how she loved to shine! Every morning, she would peek over the horizon, and her warm, golden light would spread everywhere, making flowers bloom and birds sing.
Now, Amaterasu had a brother named Susanoo. He was the god of storms, and sometimes, he could be a bit of a troublemaker. He loved a good prank, but sometimes his pranks went too far.
One day, Susanoo was feeling extra mischievous. He stomped through Amaterasu's beautiful rice fields, making a muddy mess. Then, he did something really naughty. He snuck up to Amaterasu's special weaving room, where she and her friends were making lovely cloth, and he threw a poor, scared little pony inside! It caused such a fright! One of Amaterasu's helpers was so startled she pricked her finger with her weaving needle, and it hurt very much.
Amaterasu was so upset and angry with Susanoo. "That's it!" she thought. "I've had enough!" She found a big, dark cave, called the Heavenly Rock Cave, and she went right inside, pulling a giant rock door shut behind her.
Suddenly, the whole world went dark. No sunshine, no warmth. Flowers drooped, birds stopped singing, and everyone felt cold and a little scared. Nasty little shadow creatures started creeping about because it was always nighttime.
The other gods and goddesses were very worried. "We need Amaterasu back!" they cried. So, they came up with a clever plan.
First, they gathered all the roosters they could find and had them crow as loudly as possible, hoping Amaterasu would think it was morning.
Then, they made a beautiful, shiny mirror and hung sparkling jewels on a special tree right outside the cave.
Next, a funny goddess named Ame-no-Uzume started to dance. She danced on an overturned tub, stomping her feet and making silly faces. She wiggled and giggled, and her dance was so funny that all the other gods started to laugh. They laughed louder and louder!
Inside the cave, Amaterasu heard the laughter. "Hmm," she wondered. "The world is dark and sad. Why is everyone laughing so much?" She couldn't resist. She pushed the big rock door open just a tiny crack to peek out.
"What's going on?" she asked.
One of the gods said, "Oh, Amaterasu! We're celebrating because we've found a new goddess, even more beautiful and bright than you!" And they held up the shiny mirror.
Amaterasu saw her own bright, beautiful face reflected in it. "Wow!" she thought, "Who is that radiant goddess?" She had never seen herself so clearly before.
As she leaned out a little further to get a better look, a very strong god named Tajikarao quickly grabbed her hand and pulled her all the way out of the cave! Another god quickly sealed the cave entrance with a big boulder so she couldn't go back in.
Instantly, Amaterasu's light filled the world again! The flowers perked up, the birds sang joyfully, and the nasty shadow creatures scurried away. Everyone was so happy!
And what about Susanoo? Well, the gods told him he had to leave their heavenly land for a while because of all the trouble he caused. He learned his lesson, and eventually, he and Amaterasu made up.
And that's how the sun came back to shine on the world, all thanks to a funny dance, a shiny mirror, and a little bit of curiosity.
