• The Fox and the Mask

    Aesop's Fables
Flicker the Fox loved to explore. His nose twitched, his ears perked up, and his bushy tail swished as he trotted through the tall green trees. One sunny morning, while sniffing around an old, dusty shed, he spotted something unusual.

Lying on a pile of wood shavings was a head! Not a real head, of course, but one carved from a big piece of wood. It was painted with bright colors and had a very grand, smiling face. Its eyes looked so real, and its hair was carved in fancy swirls.

"Wow!" Flicker thought. "This is the most handsome head I've ever seen! It looks so important and clever."

He crept closer. He sniffed it. He nudged it with his nose. He even tapped it gently with his paw. But the head didn't move. It didn't say anything. It just sat there, looking grand.

Flicker tilted his own clever head. He looked closer. He realized the beautiful wooden head was... empty inside. There was nothing in there at all!

Flicker chuckled to himself. "Well, well," he said, "what a beautiful face! It's a shame there are no brains behind it."

And with a flick of his tail, Flicker the Fox trotted off, thinking that sometimes, things that look the most wonderful on the outside aren't always the smartest on the inside.
