• Zeus and the Monkey

    Aesop's Fables
High up on Mount Olympus, where the clouds felt like fluffy pillows, Zeus, the king of all the gods, decided to have some fun. "I know!" he boomed, his voice like gentle thunder. "Let's have a contest to find the most beautiful baby animal in the world!"

Invitations flew out to every corner of the land. Soon, a parade of proud animal parents arrived. A lioness showed off her fluffy, golden cub, purring with pride. A graceful swan glided by with her cygnets, their feathers white as snow. A mother bear presented her roly-poly cub, all soft and cuddly. Each one hoped their baby would be chosen.

Then, a mother monkey stepped forward. She held her little baby monkey very gently. This baby monkey had a little flat nose, big curious eyes, and a tiny bit of fuzzy hair on its head. It wasn't as grand as the lion cub or as sleek as the baby swans.

Some of the other animals started to giggle. A few even whispered, "That baby isn't as fancy as ours!"

The mother monkey heard them, and she hugged her baby even tighter. She looked at Zeus and then at all the other animals. "Maybe my baby doesn't have spots like a leopard or a long trunk like an elephant," she said, her voice full of love. "But to me, this little one is the most wonderful, most precious, and most beautiful baby in the whole wide world!"

Zeus, who had seen many things, smiled a warm smile. He nodded. He knew that a mother's love is a very powerful and beautiful thing. And so, even if her baby didn't win a golden prize that day, the mother monkey went home feeling like the luckiest mom in the world, because she knew her baby was perfect just the way it was.
