• The Rooster and the Jewel

    Aesop's Fables
In a cozy little farmyard, where the pigs snorted happily and the cows mooed a morning song, lived a very busy rooster. His name was Rocky, and he took his job of finding the tastiest breakfast very seriously.

One bright morning, Rocky was extra hungry. His tummy rumbled like a tiny drum. "Time for food!" he clucked to himself, and began to scratch, scratch, scratch in the dusty ground. He was hoping for a juicy worm or a sweet piece of corn.

Suddenly, his claw hit something hard. "Ooh, what's this?" he wondered. He pecked away the dirt. There, shining in the sun, was a beautiful, sparkly jewel! It glittered with all the colors of the rainbow.

Rocky tilted his head. He looked at the jewel with one eye, then the other. "Well, now," he said. "That is very shiny. It's very pretty." He poked it with his beak. "But... can I eat it?"

He thought for a moment. "No, I don't think so. It wouldn't taste very good. And my tummy is still asking for breakfast!"

Rocky sighed a little rooster sigh. "You are a fine thing, little sparkle," he told the jewel. "But to me, one single, tasty grain of corn would be worth much more right now."

And so, Rocky the rooster gave the jewel a little flick with his foot, sending it rolling under a leaf. He went right back to his important job: scratch, scratch, scratch.

A moment later, he chirped with delight. "Aha! A perfect, golden grain of corn!" And he happily gobbled it up, feeling like the luckiest rooster in the whole farmyard.
